Meet Nonny Chimhandamba, the young business woman who’s making farming fresh again
Nonhlanhla Mokoena-Chimhandamba is the co-founder and Managing Director of Urban Grown Organics, a team of young urban farmers who are putting a fresh feel on farming. Earlier this year, she was recognised as the Top Female Entrepreneur by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development – and it’s no surprise why.
Together with her husband Simbarashe, Nonhlanhla founded Urban Grown in 2015 with the vision of creating a platform that empowers youth and boosts job creation through agriculture. “I fell in love with agriculture when I was exposed to the value chain at Nestle Nutrition,” Nonhlanhla, better known as Nonny, says. Less than four years later, the husband-and-wife team are reaping what they sowed with a 100% Black woman owned and youth run entity.
Urban Grown farms and packs greens like spinach, cabbage and baby marrow and supplies to a range of companies including British Airways, City Lodge Hotel and Pick ‘n Pay.
Meet Nonny as she shares her journey from corporate marketing to agriculture, her thoughts on urban farming in South Africa and her FNB banking solutions.
