Aliki Saragas, 27, is the producer and director of the powerful South African documentary Strike a Rock, which documented the aftermath of the Marikana massacre.
Working with the women’s group in Marikana, Sikahala Sonke, Strike a Rock premiered last year, and in under a year has travelled globally and has won multiple social justice and impact awards. The Impact Campaign associated with the film has given the leaders of Sikhala Sonke a platform to travel worldwide, telling their story and garnering support in demanding justice and accountability for the community of Marikana.
Saragas is also on the executive committee of SWIFT (Sisters Working In Film and Television), a South African NPO for women in film. “She has been instrumental in the sexual harassment support group and generally in the awareness of gender abuse in the work environment,” says her nominator, Professor NP Saragas.
