Basil Mabasa, 31, started the Xisasi Cancer Foundation, after his mother passed away from breast cancer, to increase cancer awareness in the rural areas of Limpopo. The foundation supports community members with early cancer detection, education and victim and survivor support.
He started Xisasi Business Consultants in 2008, shortly after returning from an exchange in the United Kingdom, which now consists of marketing, media, human capital management and IT teams.
He is also a founding member of Hlanganani FM, a community radio station in Bungeni, Limpopo, and works with several prominent non-governmental organisations to promote active citizenry.
Through Basil’s work, he has adopted more than 70 preschools in Limpopo and looks after more than 1 000 underprivileged children, providing them with food, toys and learning materials. He was named one of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders in 2016 and is in the process of acquiring a mobile cancer clinic to advance the fight against the disease in rural areas.
