Loyiso Mkize, 31, is a visual artist and creator of one of the country’s most popular superhero comic books, Kwezi.
Kwezi is unique in that it features a lead character that is truly South African. Mkize wanted to create a character that black youngsters could identify with, as a response to the oversaturated comic industry that is dominated by international publications. The comic was created in 2014 when Loyiso was working as an illustrator for the long-running Supa Strikas soccer series, and has captured the imagination of many young South Africans.
Mkize is also an exceptionally talented painter and has a large body of work, in which preservation of the African identity is a clear and shining theme. He has most recently had artwork commissioned by Disney for the release of the film Black Panther.
