After losing his brother to cancer in 2016, Luvalan Pillay, 25, decided to dedicate his life to fighting the disease and has raised close to R70 000 for cancer patients.
In 2017, he hosted his first family fun day where he raised over R10 000 for the Chatsworth Hospice. A year later, he raised R57 000 in a Concert4Cancer event which brought together the communities of Chatsworth, Johannesburg, Stanger, Phoenix and Merebank. The proceeds of the event went to 4-year-old Ariya’s bone marrow transplant.
Luvalan, who is studying towards his B.Ed ECD for the foundation phase, supports his family financially and has had to put his studies on hold several times to feed them. He currently teaching Grades 1 to 3 at Astra Primary School, and leads several drug awareness campaigns and food and hamper drives as head of his temple.
