Matthew Field, 17, has helped set up a library for a school in Mamelodi, volunteers for church soup kitchens in Eersterust, and is an active community service member.
The matriculant is the Speaker at his high school’s, St Alban’s College, Student Parliament.Â He co-founded the Student Action Forum â€“ a platform for young South Africans to debate current affairs, and uses his Twitter account to reach out to other teenagers through his #DailyTeenWisdom hashtag. He successfully raised funds for, and equipped, a library at Viva Village Independent School in the Alaska informal settlement in Mamelodi, Pretoria.
Matthew has represented South Africa at the World Schools Forum in Japan in 2016 and reached the finals of persuasive speech at the World Individual Public Speaking Competition in 2018. He is the chairperson of the Oratorical and Life Support Clubs at St Alban’s and is a recipient of a Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award (known in South Africa as The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment).
He has a blog in which he writes about matters that concern society, including “Saving the Rainbow” and “Apartheid still exists and itâ€™s disgusting”.
