Nomathamsanqa Lindokuhle Makhathini, 22, affectionately known as Lindo, has leadership in her blood and strives to empower women in the geology and mining sectors.
A postgraduate student at Stellenbosch University, Makhathini holds a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Geology and serves as the president of the Western Cape Society of Economic Geologists and Society of Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits. She is deputy chairperson of the Black Management Forum Student Chapter in the Western Cape and is an executive committee member of SU’s Earth Sciences Society (ESS).
Driven by the need to excel academically, she is using the knowledge and skills she has acquired from positional and non-positional leadership opportunities to contribute to women empowerment, more especially in economic geology and the mining sector.
As president of the society of economic geologists at SU it is her mission to get more women into the field as she says a lot of them find the industry intimidating. She also plans to go into communities where people don’t know anything about geology and educate people about the field.
