Sarah Madingwana, 24, is founder of The Design Parliament and the Daveyton Book Club.
The Design Parliament is a company that specialises in fashion, fine art, photography and graphic design. She started the company to be able to put food on the table and generate an income, so she could pay for her varsity fees.
Sarah also started the Daveyton Book Club with Kwandile Sikhosana. She explains that they were tired of hearing the notion that black people don’t read, and decided to start the book club.
The book club provides a comprehensive, supportive environment to meet the social, emotional, mental and spiritual needs of community members. They work on promoting self-governance and bettering the lives of the poor through educational means. Sarah explains that the vision of the book club is to establish library containers/resource centres, with access to internet, throughout South Africa for entrepreneurs, students and community members. Essentially, she says, she wants to change the mindset within townships so that young people can live purpose-driven lives.
