Sarina Mpharalala, 20, is a commerce student at the University of Cape Town who launched a campus-wide campaign to save water, and was duly dubbed Ms Amanzi by fellow students.
As a campus leader, she distributed several water saving techniques, gave talks and set the example for students to save water during Cape Town’s worst drought in 100 years.
She also drives a non-profit organisation called Vhafumakadzi Takuwani, which is the Tshivenda word for “women rise”. The organisation hosts workshops for women, helping them develop communication skills and to find employment opportunities.
In 2017, she started a makeup and nail services business to assist students who wanted their nails done for formal events such as dances and graduations, but who couldn’t afford the services. Sarina wants to be the first female president of South Africa in 2027.
